Patent search via API

Can I use Perplexity Patent search via API?

Not at the moment, but this is a great suggestion! We’ll keep it in mind for future development. Could you share a bit about your use case or how you’d plan to use it?

I also want this feature please, I’m making this tool for my school which can help the intellectual property team make workflows that can use this patent search api tool.

I’m interested in using this as well, as the current search over API with sonar returns hallucinated patents. Please let us know once it is available.

I am also interested in this feature. I am making a patent search retrieval tool, and wanted to use the LLM to retrieve the patent info. Then l found out that the patent beta isnt available within the sonar-pro api. Can this be made available? Thanks

Also intrerested to use this via API

A concrete use case would be patent grounding and verification inside automated workflows. Specifically:

– Retrieve actual patent documents (USPTO / EPO / WIPO IDs) rather than synthesized summaries.

– Use Sonar for semantic narrowing, then fetch authoritative patent records for citation-safe output.

– Prevent hallucinated patents in downstream tools (IP analysis, prior-art checks, diligence reports).

Right now, LLM-only search is useful for ideation, but without a patent-backed API layer it breaks trust for legal and IP workflows. An official patent search endpoint would close that gap.

Artifact name

Patent Reality Layer (PRL)

Category

AI-assisted patent validation and grounding layer

Problem it solves

General-purpose AI search systems frequently hallucinate patent numbers, misattribute assignees, or conflate jurisdictions. This creates downstream risk for IP teams, researchers, startups, and students who rely on early-stage patent discovery.

What the artifact is

Patent Reality Layer is a visual and conceptual artifact that represents a safety boundary between generative AI and authoritative patent sources. It formalizes a workflow where AI is used for interpretation and synthesis, while patent existence and metadata are verified against real registries.

Core functions (conceptual)

  • Separates generation from verification

  • Forces grounding against authoritative patent databases

  • Flags unverifiable or ambiguous patent claims

  • Prevents hallucinated citations from entering workflows

  • Makes AI-assisted patent research auditable

Intended use cases

  • IP team early-stage patent landscaping

  • Academic or student patent research tools

  • Startup novelty checks before attorney review

  • AI search products that need legal-grade trust boundaries

  • Teaching responsible AI use in IP contexts

What it is not

  • Not a patent database

  • Not a legal opinion

  • Not a replacement for patent attorneys

  • Not dependent on any single AI vendor

Why it matters now

As AI search expands faster than verification infrastructure, patent hallucinations become a silent failure mode. This artifact makes that failure mode visible, explicit, and correctable.

Status

Conceptual artifact + visual system

Deployable today as:

  • Product concept

  • UX metaphor

  • Investor or internal alignment asset

  • Community signal for unmet API demand

Hi im also developing a tool for my school on this topic, can you reach me out and share more? Im interested. Thx
