Why am I unable to use the API service?

Summary

I deposited ten US dollars on the Perplexity API platform and intended to try out the API usage. However, when I made the call according to the documentation, I was prompted with: “The Router API is currently in limited preview. Contact api@perplexity.ai to request access.” Isn’t the API function not available to all users? How can I apply for the access permission?

Expected behavior

I expect that I can use the API service normally.

Actual behavior

When I invoked it, I was prompted with “The Router API is currently in limited preview. Contact api@perplexity.ai to request access.”

Additional context

I’m experiencing the same issue. I added API credits specifically to use the Gateway API with perplexity/kimi-k3, but every Router endpoint I tested — /router/v1/models, /router/v1/chat/completions, and /router/v1/messages — returns HTTP 403 with the limited-preview message.

The API Console and documentation present Gateway as an available API, and I could not find any visible request-access button or indication before adding credits that separate approval was required. Could the Perplexity team clarify whether access is manually allowlisted per organization, the expected approval timeline, and what users should do with unused credits if access cannot be granted?

Hello @SevenYan,

The Router API is currently in private preview. You can request access by emailing api@perplexity.ai.

All other endpoints, such as Agent API, are available for use without application.

Thank you!

Andrew

No, I don’t think your company is seriously handling this matter. My application email has been sent for over two days. Your company said they would reply to me within 48 hours, but I haven’t received any response at all. Moreover, the refund application I submitted to your company was also not processed. I don’t understand how your company handled this incident. Why did you submit an immature product to customers for use and then transfer all the risks to the customers after the problem occurred?

@SevenYan,

I understand your frustration. I apologize that we missed our 48-hour response sla. Due to high volume demand the product was moved to private preview, and until granted, access requests are on the waitlist. Once access is granted we will send you an update. I do not yet have an ETA for moving off of the waitlist.

I don’t want this to be an endless wait. I expect there to be a deadline for a final explanation. Because your company’s refund period is 7 to 14 days. If your company fails to handle this matter properly and I exceed the refund period, then I will neither be able to use the corresponding service nor be able to make the refund. Who will bear this loss? How will your company handle this kind of situation?
